Total Film say Alfred Hitchcock is greatest director of all time

By Matt Holmes /

Total Film, the slightly less interesting clone of Empire Magazine have done their own Top 100 list. No, it's not a 'greatest movies' list but it's one that lists the Top 100 Directors of All Time. Interesting, interesting. A nice change I guess for a list. Here they are for you, the first twenty are linked to IMDB so you can see more info on them. To see the rest you will have to click read the rest of this entry. 1. Alfred Hitchcock - Superb choice. He probably has more FIVE star movies than anyone on the planet and had a run of five or six films in the 50's and early 60's which are unmatched by anyone. Innovative, a master storyteller and not afraid to take a risk. 2. Martin Scorsese 3. Steven Spielberg 4. Howard Hawks 5. Francis Ford Coppola 6. Orson Welles - OK so Citizen Kane is amazing. Touch of Evil is amazing. Is it enough though though to warrant 6th place? He's a great personal hero of mine but he maybe needed one more really big hit to deserve to be this high when you consider the guy below him. 7. Ingmar Bergman 8. Stanley Kubrick - Never a director I've fully been able to enjoy but I can appreciate his films and how amazing most of them are. He should be higher than Coppola and Welles... for sure. 9. Peter Jackson - As much as Lord of the Rings is the greatest cinematic achievment of all time, it's a little soon in his career to have him this high. 10. David Fincher - No way. Two outstanding movies, two very good movies... not enough. 11. Akira Kurosawa - Should be WAY higher. 12. Quentin Tarantino 13. Billy Wilder 14. John Ford - Below Fincher? NO WAY! 15. Steven Soderbergh - Terrible choice for 15th. Shameful. 16. Michael Powell - WHO? 17. David Cronenberg 18. The Cohen Brothers 19. Woody Allen 20. Paul Thomas Anderson 21. Clint Eastwood 22. David Lynch 23. Jean Renoir 24. Hayao Miyazaki 25. Robert Altman 26. Sam Peckinpah 27. Michael Mann 28. Jean-Pierre Mellville 29. Luis Bunuel 30. Terrence Malick 31. Christopher Nolan 32. Yasujiro Ozu 33. Carol Reed 34. Rob Reiner 35. Roman Polanski 36. Sergio Leone 37. James Cameron 38. Ridley Scott 40. David Lean 41. Ang Lee 42. Frank Capra 43. Preston Sturgess 44. Francois Truffaut 45. Werner Herzog 46. Alexander Payne 47. Krysztof Kieslowski 48. Fritz Lang 49. Mike Leigh 50. Sam Fuller TO SEE THE 50-100 CHOICES VISIT TOTAL FILM
