Train To Busan Sequel Delayed
The highly-anticipated 'Penninsula' is pushed back two weeks to August 21.
Director Yeon Sang-Ho’s action horror film Peninsula, the sequel to his 2016 breakout hit Train To Busan, had had its North American theatrical release pushed back two weeks. Originally scheduled for August 7, it's now tentatively set for August 21 via Well Go USA.
After being screened at the 2020 Cannes Film Festival, the North American distribution rights were picked up by the indie distributor, which specializes in bringing foreign action and genre movies Stateside. Initially it was set for a limited release on August 7 in 150 theaters, but due to nationwide spikes in the COVID-19 epidemic that date has been pushed back. Streaming rights were picked up Shudder, with a tentative release date of 2021.
Set four years after the first film, the story will follow soldier Jung-seok, who is assigned to a covert operation into infected territory, where he stumbles across a group of survivors struggling to survive. The cast stars Gang Dong-Won, Lee Jung-Hyun, Lee Re, Kwon Hae-Hyo, Kim Min-Jae, Go Kyo-Hwan, Kim Do-Yoon, and Lee Ye-Won.
Released in 2016, Train to Busan was a smash hit in Asia, breaking box office records and becoming the highest-grossing South Korean film of all time. An animated prequel entitled Seoul Station was released one month later, and a possible English-language remake is in the works.
