3. The Night Flier (1997)

The most underrated of all Stephen King big-screen adaptations, The Night Flier is a grim and grimy tale of monsters and madness that, though low-budget and dated today, still knows how to shake with terror.

Starring the great Miguel Ferrer as a tabloid journalist on the trail of a serial killer he believes may be a creature of the night, the horror flick stuns as an exercise in murky filmmaking; the entire film is dripping with dread, from its grainy aesthetic to the moral failings of its careless protagonist. 

But The Night Flier doesn't just fly high as a horror, mind, since it also twists itself into a dark and brooding character study of a terrible man who meets something bigger than himself. 

Gritty and harrowing, this King adaptation is a nasty piece of work - a bit dated now, and it pulls its punches at the last hurdle - but a gripping one nonetheless, especially where Ferrer's incredible performance is concerned.
