13. The Underneath (1995)

The most underrated feature film from the unpredictable and wonderful mind of Steven Soderbergh, The Underneath contains multitudes, at once a stirring romance, a bristling thriller, and even a hint of horror. 

The drama follows the attempted atonement of a prolific gambler (Peter Gallagher), who returns home with scores to settle, apologies to make, and old habits biting at his heels, tripping him up as he looks forward to a new life.

Directed by Soderbergh with a flair for the dramatic, hyper-stylish and grand, The Underneath finds the beloved filmmaker - always a man seemingly impervious to cliché - deliver the goods with a film that may struggle, at times, to poke under its surface, but always soars as the desperate character study of a man on the edge. 

Again, by Soderbergh standards it's a small film, but as a thriller with unique style and genuine excitement, it's a shiny gem begging to be dug up.
