20 Insane Upcoming Movies You Won't Believe Are Real
2. Saccharine
Saccharine is the new horror film from Natalie Erika James (Relic), and touts one of the most bewilderingly provocative setups for any recent genre offering.
Downtrodden medical student Hana (Midori Francis) struggles with body image issues and falls victim to a new weight loss craze, which involves eating a substance which is composed of - brace yourself - human ashes. Yup.
And if eating the remains of dead people didn't already seem sketchy enough, Hana ends up being terrorised by the ghost of the very person whose remains she's been consuming.
That's one hell of a premise alright, and if early reviews from its recent Sundance premiere are any indication, James has made good on the twisted concept.
It also won't surprise many that the film has already earned comparisons to The Substance with its darkly satirical indictment of highly questionable weight-loss fads and more grounded social commentary on female body image.
