16. Return of the Living Dead

In July 2023, a reboot of the Return of the Living Dead franchise was announced, and the next year, a teaser trailer was released revealing it to be a quasi-sequel set over Christmas 1985, 18 months after the classic original.

The film was to be written and directed by Steve Wolsh, with Devon Sawa set to star and a December 2025 release date initially planned.

However, this date was missed, and though filming apparently took place last year, in August 2026 it was revealed that the film's legal status was in dispute, with the Los Angeles Superior Court ruling that the original 1985 movie is owned by MGM, not Wolsh's company Living Dead Media.

And so, it's entirely possible that this prevents Return of the Living Dead from ever actually being released, unless Wolsh can either negotiate a deal with MGM or edit the film to remove any explicit references to the IP.

As such, don't be too shocked if it remains forever trapped in post-production limbo.
