Despite having started shooting almost 18 months ago, it's fascinating how little concrete information we have about Alejandro G. Iñárritu's (Birdman, The Revenant) new film Digger.

Tom Cruise will star as Digger Rockwell, who is described as "the most powerful man in the world," and who embarks on a desperate mission to save humanity before a disaster he unleashed destroys everything.

As fascinating as all this sounds, what the hell does it actually mean? 

Is Tom Cruise playing the President of the United States or someone with actual superpowers? What is the nature of this disaster exactly, and how could it destroy everything?

The wildly enigmatic teaser trailer sheds basically no further light on the matter, beyond showing Cruise at what might be an offshore oil rig with a shovel. That's all we've got.

But frankly, the Iñárritu-Cruise pairing is so innately compelling that they could just release the film this coming October without any further elaboration and cinephiles would still flock in droves to see it.
