Warcraft Review – 4 Ups And 6 Downs

For all its faults (which I€™ll get into, don€™t worry), Warcraft is still from Duncan Jones, who did such good jobs with Moon and the underrated Source Code it€™s not even necessary to point out his celebrity Dad anymore.

And while it feels like his directorial freedom€™s been a little squished under the blockbuster weight, he still leaves a stamp on the film, especially in the visual department. The world of Azeroth looks gorgeous and distinct and, despite limited sets, sweeping shots linking them to the cartoony CGI world make everything feel big. And even though the action may not always capture the weight to all the warhammer smacking, there is care to make sure each fight feels a unique event.

The CGI is slightly more cartoony than we€™re used to from the likes of The Lord Of The Rings and Game Of Thrones, but that mostly works to Warcraft's advantage and makes the cracks in the effects harder to spot.
