Warcraft Review – 4 Ups And 6 Downs

The Downs:

6. It Doesn€™t Explain The Mythology

Universal Pictures

Woe betide you if you€™ve never played World Of Warcraft, because Warcraft€™s mythology is basically impenetrable. The film goes back to the early days of the mythos, but its background is still so dense that you can never get into those gorgeous worlds.

Nothing is explained. Places and peoples and warnings are tossed around like loose change and none of them make any sense. I don€™t really want to just point to The Lord Of The Rings, but that€™s a text book example of setting up a complicated world before diving into the minutiae - a similar tactic would have worked wonders here.

Look, there€™s nothing wrong with a franchise film having extra benefit for the pre-existing fanbase (Captain America: Civil War had loads of that), but it needs to offer some entry level for newcomers to get into it. Especially when it's a series that is lauded for such a great story.
