Watch: New Man of Steel Trailer

By Shaun Munro /

Now that Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy has wrapped up, it's really all hands on deck for Zack Snyder's impending Superman reboot, Man of Steel, the first full trailer of which dropped moments ago, and can be watched obsessively below. Though the first half of it is very much in line with the more sombre, thoughtful tone we'd expect from a film produced by Christopher Nolan - and reflecting the popularity of "dark" and "gritty" superhero fare at the moment - the second half demonstrates a lot of the visual bombast that Snyder is better known for. We also get the briefest of glimpses at the villain of the piece, Michael Shannon's General Zod, and what appears to be an epic fight between him and Superman in the sky. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=KVu3gS7iJu4 We also get our first looks at the likes of Laurence Fishburne as Perry White and Amy Adams as Lois Lane. What this trailer seems to make clear above all else is the tone of the film, that Snyder has (hopefully) reigned in the excesses that have bothered us during some of his other films, and that Henry Cavill very much looks the part as one of cinema's most iconic figures. Most interesting seems to be some of the moral choices Clark faces throughout his life, such as deciding to save a child early in his life while risking exposing his identity, and the difficulties this raises with his adoptive father, Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner). That this seems to follow Clark into his adult life as Superman appears to suggest that Snyder is going to develop Superman as a being with existential issues, and frankly, we can't wait to see how that plays out on screen. What do you think so far? Man of Steel is released June 14th, 2013.
