Why Are They Putting Seat Belts In TheatersThis Summer? was the tag line on the teaser posters for Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. The film wasnt quite the roller coaster ride the poster hinted at, and the William Shatner directed movie left many people feeling let down after the blockbuster run of the previous movies.

If The Voyage Home was ecological in nature, The Final frontier was theological. Inspired by late night evangelists begging for money, Shatner came up with the idea of a deluded Vulcan hijacking the Enterprise, and going on a personal quest to find god. It would turn out that he doesnt find god, but some kind of devil creature. Throw in some rock monsters and rivers of fire; Shatner had a grand plan for the fifth movie in the franchise.

Too busy with Ghostbusters II and Back To The Future III, ILM was unavailable to provide the special effects which explains why they look so ropey. The production was also plagued by budget cuts, strikes and the ending had to be quickly hashed together. The Final Frontier left many bemused.

Often labeled the worst Star Trek movie, it is nothing of the sort. It has some genuine good moments and is the closest in spirit to the Original Series. William Shatner wants to do a Directors Cut to fix all the problems but for some bizarre reason, Paramount is reluctant.

What It Says About You: This movie has what got you into Star Trek in the first place. Who cares if the special effects are crap? They were rubbish in the Original Series but that never stopped people from enjoying the show. This movie has heart, a good story and focuses on the relationship between Kirk, Spock & McCoy. None of the other movies have moments where you can see the close bond the three main character have, it is something that hasnt been seen since the original show and that is what makes this movie special. You also are probably not very religious so it gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling when Star Trek takes on blind faith and gives it a bloody nose. It also has one of the best scenes from any Star Trek movie or episode, the scene where McCoy has to perform euthanasia to stop his sick father from suffering. The shoestring budget, obvious sets and witty dialogue is what makes The Final Frontier stand apart from the other movies, and it is all reminiscent of what makes the 60s show resonate with you.
