8. Over-Eagerness To Build A Franchise

The Mummy is the first movie in Universal's Dark Universe, an attempt to build a Marvel Cinematic Universe-esque world which will eventually include the likes of The Wolfman, The Invisible Man, The Bride of Frankenstein, Van Helsing, Dracula and so on.

The problem is that large chunks of the film just feel like an advertisement for this shared universe, especially whenever Russell Crowe's Dr. Jekyll is on screen.

Sometimes audiences just want to watch a standalone movie without being sold a dozen other films in the bargain, and The Mummy's attempt to promote its follow-ups just felt desperate. How's about making one good film before committing to more?
