Why You Won’t See R-Rated MCU Movies

Hint: it's Disney-related.

Following the extraordinary box office figures that R-rated smash Deadpool is currently pulling in - $621 million worldwide, at last count - the general consensus is that a lot of other movie studios are going to follow suit, and flood the market with their own R rated extravaganzas. You know, considering that it turns out there's such a taste for it (which fans have known for years). That said, one major studio that will not be going the darker path is Marvel. At a recent annual shareholder's meeting over at Disney, a member asked CEO Bob Iger whether Marvel had any plans to make any R rated superhero flicks. The response was firm, as a reporter from the LA Times broke over Twitter: https://twitter.com/DanielNMiller/status/705447422667849729?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw So there you have it. You surely can't be too surprised that Disney aren't going to make an R rated movie, considering they've never made one in their entire illustrious history. The revelation also fits the fact that Kevin Feige has spoken quite openly about the way the MCU is heading tonally, saying nobody should hold their breath for anything particularly dark or adult. As it stands, Marvel have got their Netflix output, which has actually been fairly out-there in terms of violence and sauciness. So that'll have to whet your whistle for now, True Believers.

Captain America: Civil War is released in the UK on 29th April and in the US on 6th May. Daredevil Season 2 drops on Netflix 18th March.
