Initially reported by The Direct, the rumor was corroborated by Brandon Katz who said he had likewise "heard whispers about it." Though Katz's tweet seems to suggest that Keanu Reeves will reprise the eponymous role, which he originated in the 2005 film directed by Francis Lawrence, it's unclear whether or not that's the case.

Abrams is currently developing a Justice League Dark series for HBO Max, part of the ongoing "Multiverse" shared universe by Warner Bros. and DC that includes the upcoming The Flash movie featuring Michael Keaton as Batman, a role he last played in the 1992 film Batman Returns. DC's Arrowverse TV series, which featured Matt Ryan as Constantine, have previously featured several inter-universe and inter-continuity crossovers between their series and the DCEU movie universe, as well as previous iterations of the characters from years past.

John Constantine has previously been seen in live-action in the aforementioned live-action film and television series, the latter of which only lasted one season. Ryan reprised his role in voice-over form in three DTV animated films released between 2017 and 2020.
