It can - and indeed has - been widely debated as to just what state Warner Bros' DC Extended Universe was in prior to the release of Wonder Woman, especially with the divide between fans vs critics, but this is a film to unite both groups.

It is by some distance the best of the DCEU movies so far, and not just because the other efforts were lacklustre: it's genuinely good. There's a noticeable shift in tone, which feels far more hopeful and inspiring even against the backdrop of 'the war to end all wars', and with plenty of added humour. The action scenes are mostly great, and while the film does fall down in its third act, it still stands as a movie where the pros really outweigh the cons.

A big reason for that is its characters, led by Gal Gadot's Diana Prince and Chris Pine's Steve Trevor. They give the movie a lot of its heart and humour, and are joined by a supporting cast including Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen, Ewan Bremner, Saïd Taghmaoui, and Lucy Davis. Opposing them are villains such as General Ludendorff (Danny Huston) and Doctor Poison (Elena Anaya).

Invariably not all of the characters work, either because of the script or just lack of screentime, but some of them are the best we've met yet in the DCEU, and the heroes we deserve. (Contains spoilers.)
