Andy Serkis has been trying to get an animated adaptation of George Orwell's Animal Farm made since 2011, when he was co-writing it with Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt.

Serkis entered the director's chair in 2012 but progress slowed for years, and though Netflix acquired distribution in 2018, it wasn't until 2022 that production finally started.

By this point Netflix had ditched the distribution rights, and when the cast was finally announced in 2025, many took umbrage with Seth Rogen's casting as the villainous boar Napoleon.

It didn't help that the first look images from the film were... not great, and it had a low-profile premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival almost a full year before its U.S. theatrical release.

Despite Serkis' undeniable passion, Animal Farm was panned into the ground for its general bungling of Orwell's themes and reliance on toilet humour.
