WOW: THE MIST on Blu-Ray!
I've spoken about THE MIST several times already but I watched the movie for the second time this week, and for the first time on it's amazing Blu-Ray transfer and I'm convinced that this is a spectacular film that so underperformed at the theatres, it was a massive travesty. It's one of the best pure genre horror movies I have seen in years, it takes Alfred Hitchcock at his best and gives it a third act straight from a Twilight Zone episode. It's the best Stephen King adaptation since Darabont's own THE GREEN MILE and that in itself should have been enough for you to see it... It's so much more than a typical monster tale, like all of the best King adaptations it's the horrors of man, those evil thoughts that are in our mind and only kept sane because "it's all part of the plan". Remember when The Joker was telling Two-Face about how chaos can so quickly make a sane person "loose their mind"? Well it's right here. This is the result of it. When it becomes a matter of survival, you would be amazed to see how much you change as a person. Who's to say you wouldn't find yourself on the side of the relegious preacher, Darabont has kind of made four movies (the others are THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION and THE MAJESTIC) about hope, all very different but carrying the same theme. This is a stunning movie and actually one of my favourite 1080p transfers so far, blood has never looked sicker than one scene in this movie. I could almost smell and taste it. The really cool jewel in the crown here is that the transfer comes with a Black and White option, so you can watch the movie how Frank Darabont originally intended it but no studio would finance it. Shame, because it actually works better and it's not the crappy gimmick from THE GOOD GERMAN where it looks too glossy too be noir... this is real black and white, in the Hitchcock mode. Then there's an excellent audio commentary from Darabont, one of the best in the business at them and a couple of other nice featurettes. This comes highly recommended.
