While our own assessments of the movie have predominantly found plenty to fault, the movie can't help but nail a home run from time to time, delivering some truly magnificent action and unexpectedly potent emotional beats, as well as a tantalising post-credits tease for what's coming next.

Though these scenes cannot alone or together compensate for the movie's myriad flaws, they probably do enough to make Apocalypse worth watching at least once for the sheer experience of it, even if you might not want to revisit it again any time soon.

As these terrific moments prove, the movie's far from a disaster, but sadly only touches occasionally on its huge promise. Here are the 11 best moments from X-Men: Apocalypse...

11. Magneto, The Cop Killer

Though Magneto having a wife and child in Poland may be fairly generic, it does result in one of the franchise's most memorably savage death scenes.

After a Polish police officer accidentally fires an arrow at Magneto's wife and daughter, Magneto's rage gets the better of him, and he fires a metal locket (containing pictures of his parents) at the half-dozen cops, slicing all their throats, causing them to drop to the ground in grimly poetic fashion.

It's pretty gnarly stuff for a PG-13 movie, and emphasises the anger and anguish Magneto is feeling, ultimately causing him to fall in with Apocalypse. Fassbender totally kills the scene, and visually it looks great too.
