11. Metallica Plus Body Horror = Archangel
For any thrash metal fans, the use of Metallica's Four Horsemen is a thrilling little Easter Egg in Apocalypse. It's always nice to see the gods of the genre acknowledged, even if it's pretty shocking in a mainstream movie.
What is even more shocking is the grimness of the body horror transformation that sees Angel's wings change from normal feathery ones to terrifying bio-metallic ones. It's almost like watching a David Cronenberg as the frongs burst out of Angel's skin and he screams in pain. Any kids watching must have had their nights thoroughly ruined.
And it's not the only time: later when Wolverine is in his full Weapon X gear, he pulls massive screws out from his skin, which verges on the grotesque as well. It's almost like Singer has been watching gross-out horrors in preparation.
Also, what is it with Apocalypse and shaving people's heads? Is it his fetish? Does he believe it makes his Horsemen more powerful? Or is he just a keen amateur barber?
