Following on from Captain America: Civil War's early European release, movie fans outside of the States have been gifted another early look at the latest comic book movie from 20th Century Fox with X-Men: Apocalypse. This time around, though, it might not be such a good thing.

Reviews for X-Men: Apocalypse may have been steadily improving since its UK release, although a current aggregate score on Rotten Tomatoes of just 51% isn't enough to freshen that approval rating. Critics have labeled the movie "a bloated affair" which wastes the potential of its cast and takes itself too seriously even as it tries - and fails - to inject the narrative with some humour.

WhatCulture's own Alex Leadbeater was equally unenthusiastic in his review, describing X-Men: Apocalypse as "an astounding waste of potential that could feasibly kill the franchise" and accusing director Bryan Singer of taking the series back to "a world of iffy films plagued by plot holes."

Still, while the general critical consensus seems to be that this is a competent entry to the franchise at best - and a completely wasted opportunity to capitalize on the gains made in Days Of Future Past at worst - if there's one thing that critically maligned comic book movies such as Man Of Steel have taught us it's that fans and critics all too often don't see eye to eye.
