10 Awesome Video Games That Didn't Get The Credit They Deserved

3. The Darkness (2007)

I remember the buzz surrounding the original Darkness game very well. I had heard of it, heard positive things about it in fact but hadn't actually bothered to pick it up. It was only when my flatmate at the time picked up a copy second hand that it actually fully entered my consciousness. And then, like the darkness possessing Mike Patton voiced protagonist Jackie Estacado himself, it took root and never left. What I loved about The Darkness was it's uniqueness when compared with almost every other homogenized shooter on the market; it was a thinking man's FPS (which is simply a turn of phrase and in no way excludes lady gamers) which was based directly on the indie comic book of the same name. In other words, it was right up my alley. The Darkness has since become quite the cult classic but despite that, has never managed to wow in terms of sales. Despite somehow securing itself a sequel (which was similarly brushed under the carpet by a marketplace more interested in Call of Battle: Modern Black Opsfield 10 than a gaming experience they've never actually had before) The Darkness never managed to perform well financially and according to vgchartz.com has, as of Nov 2012, has only netted global sales of around 400k units. If you're one of the countless millions who've never given this fantastic FPS a run-through, do yourself a favour and address the issue immediately.
