This is possibly the greatest boss fight in the history of gaming, which may be down to the fact that Psycho Mantis is one of the best video game villains ever. The best thing about Metal Gear Solid's boss fights is that they do not go down the traditional route of bigger means better. Rather than throwing hulking behemoths at every opportunity, Metal Gear provided gamers with bosses that actually made them think, with this being the best example. Psycho Mantis was the most intriguing character in Metal Gear Solid, which is no mean feat when you consider the wealth of great characters that populated the first game. His ability to second-guess every move you made was frustrating and impressive in equal measure and he also had a neat trick in which he could read any Konami saved games on your memory card. But the most badass aspect of this fight was the manner in which you defeated him; in a stroke of genius, the only way you could defeat Psycho Mantis was by switching your controller port so he can't 'read your mind'. It was not the first instance of the game breaking the fourth wall, but it was definately the best, and it was made even better if you figured it out on your own rather than waiting for the Colonel to tell you via your codec.
