6. BFG - DOOM
With the massive, hellish enemies of DOOM requiring a pretty explosive approach, heavy weaponry was always going to be an absolute must. DOOM's BFG is the very essence of this, with a few iterations of the thing appearing in the series over the years.
But whether you know it as "Big Fragging Gun" or "Bio Force Gun", the BFG is undeniably useful. Direct hits from earliest versions of the weapon invariably result in an instant kill for the poor target, but additional splash damage can affect further enemies as extra projectiles are fired at the very same time.
Later versions have altered mechanics and abilities, such as a charging requirement that allows the BFG to deal incredible amounts of focussed damage. This is a risky move, though, as overcharging the thing will lead to it overheating and exploding, killing the player immediately.
