Here's a great idea guys. Let's create a console mascot who's just a giant face made up out of graphical elements that are so entrenched in the mid-90s, that within two years he'll be laughed out of the room for how outdated he looks. Yep, Polygon Man was very much a product of his time - a momentary PS1 mascot who was about as timeless as a jar of pesto once you've opened it. He was meant to represent everything that was revolutionary about the Sony's new console, and yet was much more reminiscent of a boss from Starfox. In fairness, they did a great job of pretending this guy never existed, and it's hard to find the early PSX adverts starring Polygon Man these days. One anecdote goes that when PlayStation top-dog Ken Kutaragi first saw Mr. Man, he was infuriated that his angles were flat-shaded, rather than the much smoother Gouraud-shaded, which would've been a far better representation of the PS1's power. Polygon Man was purportedly scrapped soon after this mishap. Bizarrely, Sony brought back Polygon Man as the final boss of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. A sign, maybe, that the PlayStation brand's roster of memorable characters has always been a bit lacking.
