7. SXSW Cancels "Gamergate" Panels

South by Southwest is a collection of film, music and media festivals alongside conferences that converge every year in Austin, Texas. It is one of the largest of its kind, and as of late often finds itself the host of interesting discussions around emerging technologies, including video games. A few months back it was announced that SXSW Interactive would host two major video game panels next year. One, titled €œLevel Up: Overcoming Harassment In Games," was set to discuss how to address and combat harassment in video games. The other, titled €œSavePoint: A Discussion on the Gaming Community,€ was to tackle the current social and political landscape of the industry, its community and journalism overall. Seems harmless, right? Unfortunately, days after announcing these panels, the festival received multiple threats of violence, and both were canceled. This lead to major disagreements regarding the validity of the threats and whether SXSW was right to cancel the panels. It also brought more Gamergate controversy back into public discussion once again, with some even labeling the SavePoint panel as a €œGamergate panel.€ SXSW ended up regretting the decision, acknowledging that they €œsent an unintended message that SXSW not only tolerates online harassment but condones it.€ They also announced that they would be hosting a day long online harassment summit to make up for it, but the damage was already done. It just goes to show you that the discussion around gender politics in video games continues to be just as turbulent as ever.
