10. Dark Souls

As a franchise, Dark Souls is infamously brutal, designed to test the very determination of the player and their capacity for unending pain.

In a world previously inhabited by dragons and demons, the flame came to bring light to the world, erradicating these fearsome overlords in the process. Now, the flame risks extinguishing, plunging the world back into the dark.

Following this scene-setting, we meet your character-created hero who has been left to rot in a dungeon. After your escape, you are given a short corridor to work out the controls, with other damned prisoners at your mercy to perform some test swings with your broken sword.

At the end of this corridor, you enter a large open atrium in which you encounter the first boss of the game: the Asylum Demon.

That's right, a boss in what is supposedly the tutorial.

Many new players will be deceived into believing that this boss will be easy and will just demonstrate boss mechanics before you begin to play the actual game. Oh no. The Asylum Demon will crush you into an undead pancake without hesitation.
