1. Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri

Buy Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri Sid's name has been most commonly associated with the legendary Civilization series, all of which is available to download at GOG.com. But many fans of Mr. Meier will fondly reminisce about Alpha Centauri, the space-based, turn-based empire builder that takes place on Chiron, the planet that the spaceship at the end of Civ lands on. This is far more than just 'Civ in Space' however, as it has a fantastic storyline that takes cues from sci-fi classics like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Dune. After you land on the planet, you choose one of fourteen leaders to set up a human colony on the planet, competing with the other leaders to become the dominant faction on it. It looks similar to Civilization II, but it's brimming with its own character, lore, and gameplay mechanics that you'll need to get to grips with. Alpha Centauri puts the recent Civilization: Beyond Earth to shame, showing the glossier, more recent game how a true sci-fi Civ game should look. The version you can buy on GOG.com includes the Alien Crossfire expansion pack.
