Now, to be totally fair to Valve's legendary FPS franchise, this hatred has nothing to do with the quality of the Half-Life games whatsoever: they're all sharp, entertaining shooters that deliver what fans expect.

Except, 2007's Half-Life 2: Episode Two dared to conclude on an agonising cliffhanger - the death of Alyx Vance's father Eli - and 12 years later, fans are still waiting for either Episode Three or Half-Life 3 to tie things off.

Eli's death only exacerbates the frustration fans feel at the Half-Life series evaporating into the ether without a definitive ending, and Valve's infuriating lack of communication regarding the series' future has only further pissed fans off.

No matter the many great moments the Half-Life franchise has given us, Eli's elliptical death is the embodiment of all the unfulfilled promise and potential of the last decade-plus.
