10 Gaming Commandments All Modern Games Seem To Ignore

3. Gameplay > Graphics

It's one of the most basic tenets of gaming, that though shiny graphics are a great thing to behold, they can never overshadow the gameplay. A video game trailer is always going to highlight the visuals over pretty much everything else - who can forget those first glimpses at games like Crysis 2 and Battlefield 3? - but it's the gameplay that will ultimately stand the test of time once we've gotten over some mind-blowing visuals, and it's the gameplay that will endure and keep us playing the game several gaming generations from now. The problem, particularly with the FPS genre, is that developers are so dead-set on creating visually immersive experiences that they often forget the basics, to create a refined, authentic gameplay experience above all else; take the recent Medal of Honour: Warfighter, a visually sublime game that is nevertheless completely malnourished in every other area, clearly a result of far more resources being devoted to the look than the feel of the game.
