2. The Boss Reveal - Metal Gear Solid 3

Metal Gear Solid 3 has one of the best stories in video game history, and is easily the most coherent of the MGS narratives with its more pared-down, simple approach. The game puts us in the shoes of Solid Snake's father, Big Boss, who is tasked with taking down a squad spearheaded by The Boss, an American who has defected to the Soviet Union (the game is set during the Cold War). In the game's final boss battle, Big Boss kills The Boss, and as the ending plays out, we discover a very unsettling, depressing revelation indeed. The Boss was not a defector; she was in deep cover in order to procure The Philosopher's Legacy from the Russians - a large sum of money that the U.S. wanted - but when it became apparent that she could not be removed, her mission status changed, and her last mission was simply to be killed by her finest pupil, Snake himself. Only Snake and a handful of others ever learn about The Boss' sacrifice, while the rest of the world knows her as a traitor, and that's what her name will forever be tainted as. Snake gives her a hero's salute, and that's pretty much where we lose it.
