10 Gaming Predictions For 2014

6. Valve's Steam Machine Fails To Catch On With Consumers

Valve's Steam Machine has had a lot of hype over the last year, a Linux-based gaming PC that hopes to place PC gaming firmly in the living room while completely cutting Microsoft out of the equation. Though Valve seems totally committed to the idea and have companies like AlienWare on-board designing their own Steam Machines, I'm just not convinced this idea has a large enough target audience to really go the distance. PC gamers are generally going to be happy enough with just incrementally upgrading their PC, while console gamers are unlikely to be swayed towards a mysterious and unfamiliar brand, and so it really only leaves Steam fanboys and Linux nerds. As someone who has their gaming PC connected to a 40-inch TV at all times, I find the Steam Machine a pretty boring concept, and I'm just not sure there are many people who would take a punt on something like this when they can just buy the more recognisable, reliable brands of Microsoft and Sony.
