10 Greatest FPS Games Of The Last Ten Years

A definitive list!

By Jack Pooley /

The FPS genre receives more criticism than most other types of video game for failing to innovate and too often delivering a warmed-over experience that feels all too similar. We've all played through a stream of forgettable FPS titles over the years, and it's true that only every so often does a truly original entry into the genre emerge: we've become especially fed up with the glut of generic military shooters and sci-fi blast 'em ups, and crave something fresh, clever and unique. What the future will hold remains to be seen (though Evolve certainly looks like it might be the shot in the arm the genre needs), but over the last 10 years, gamers have been blessed with a number of excellent FPS games that reinvented the genre, cementing themselves in the annals of video game history forever more. We've got ground-breaking multiplayer titles, unexpectedly character-driven sandbox fare, super-smart sci-fi, a couple of console classics and, well, arguably one of the greatest video games ever made. Note that we intentionally left the Portal games off this list because they barely qualify as shooters, brilliant though they are. Still, the last decade has been a (mostly) great one for gaming, so excuse us if we didn't manage to include every superb FPS game. Did we miss any of your personal favourites? Or do you disagree with any of our choices? Let us know in the comments!
