Respawn Entertainment is a company formed by former Call of Duty developers Jason West and Vince Zampella, who after being fired from Infinity Ward, decided to try and take a bite out of the FPS giant's huge market share with a new, ground-breaking FPS title. That game turned out to be this year's Titanfall, an outrageously entertaining shooter in which players start off as mere soldiers known as pilots, though after a few minutes of play, are able to call in "Titans", gigantic mechs which they can then climb inside and control to cause wanton destruction. Though it lacked a compelling campaign and the online-only approach wasn't to all tastes, Titanfall took the CoD formula, gave it a healthy sci-fi injection, and the results were infinitely more enjoyable than most of the recent games in that series. The strong map design, free-running mechanics and Titans themselves all combined to make for a weighty, brutal, absurdly enjoyable time that addressed many of the complaints leveled against CoD over the years, while leaving us hungry for another Titanfall game sometime in the near future.
