10. Doom's Hangar (Doom)
The gratifying thump of the heavy metal soundtrack, the meaty explosion as one of those barrels bursts into flame and the side-to-side glances of your character's avatar towards the bottom of the screen. Those are all hallmarks of the original Doom release, and they all make it one worth replaying time and time again.
Being dropped into that initial Hangar level and circling round the dead 2D sprites on the ground is like slipping into an old pair of shoes. There's something immediately nostalgic about Doom; as fun as the 2016 remake was, it lacks that sentimental oomph.
Few FPS games can touch the atmosphere Doom created back in the 90s.
That first level is a sprint to the finishing line, one complete with pistol/shotgun blasts that somehow still feel rewarding even amidst an era rife with Hollywood-worthy epics like Call Of Duty that aim to make every shot resonate. Back in their day, nobody could match id's masterpiece, and it's still worth playing.
