10. Mushroom Kingdom Fusion

Perhaps the ultimate fan fiction, Mushroom Kingdom Fusion combines elements from numerous series – including Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog, Castlevania & Metroid – combining multiple stages, enemies and power-ups, creating a seriously amalgamated style of gameplay that allows players to tackle their favourite levels from different perspectives, playing through the Mushroom Kingdom as Sonic or Simon Belmont, for instance.

The game has been in development since the early 2000s, Team Fusion growing exponentially over the years to incorporate dozens of developers and designers, the original creator – JudgeSpear – since steeping down from the project, handing over the reins to more experienced creators.

In 2013, Mushroom Kingdom Fusion was apparently cancelled; however, a trailer was released the following year showcasing several new stages: Fire Temple, Gelatinous Journey, and Moon Fortress (which can be seen in the video below).
