10. Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance

This entry in the Kingdom Hearts series focuses upon Sora and Riku’s Mark of Mastery Exam, which will allow them to master their Keyblade abilities if they can succeed. The player controls both Sora and Riku interchangeably, with the time each can use being limited to a meter which when empty will cause that character to “drop” out of action.

Interestingly, whilst both characters explore the same worlds, they take vastly different journeys, meaning that to discover the full story, the player must complete each half. Another new addition in this game is the presence of dream eaters, who can fight along your characters in battle, as well as be raised and nurtured through the menu to gain and enhance their skills and abilities.

It is truly a strange experience to see these brightly coloured animals bouncing around in cutscenes from Disney properties, such as Tron and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Then, time travel gets introduced and suddenly everything gets even weirder.

Whilst this game continues to focus on the conflict between light and darkness, the key theme is Riku’s character development and growth. This includes the significance of trust he learns to have in others, as well as himself.
