You may have recently heard about Nintendo's woes concerning sales for the Wii U. They were bad enough for the CEO Satoru Iwata to issue an official apology (which included a formal bow) and the cutting of his own salary in half, along with salary cuts for some board members. This is coming off a great run Nintendo experienced through the mammoth success of the Wii console and the evolving DS, but many of us worry that the company is beginning to fade into irrelevancy. Microsoft and Sony have utterly demolished the Wii U in terms of sales and cultural impact, whilst mobile gaming continues to drive nails into the coffin of handheld devices like the 3DS. Amid all of this bad news lies the fact that many of us are simply getting sick of Nintendo games. Specifically, we're getting sick of many of the characters who continuously grace the box art of the next sequel or spinoff that has come to be expected, especially with the latest new console already being a year old. We've listed some of the most well-established heroes, you'll find that their problems vary but the solution to revitalising the Nintendo pantheon really comes down to some clever risk-taking and even gutting of some played-out games.
