This was a really tough one - as tempting as it was to go with the more advanced DS, or even skip the handheld thing altogether and induct the Wii as the last Nintendo system on the list, the good old fashioned Gameboy wins it. It may look like a terrible mobile phone prototype from the 80's now, but there's a certain grace to the machine, with those gaudy-red buttons standing out like the proverbial sore thumb on that (always dirty) shabby exterior. Simply put, the Nintendo Gameboy is the best handheld console ever made, because it was just so damn original. The thought of taking games anywhere away from your television was impossible back when the Gameboy was initially released in 1989 (1990 for Europe), but Nintendo made it happen. A shout out for the Sega Game Gear, which was bloody terrible, and proved just how titanic a piece of hardware the Gameboy was. One of gaming's biggest accomplishments. Best games: Tetris, Super Mario Land 2 - Six Golden Coins, Mega Man V, Pokemon Series.
