6. Forza Motorsport

The Forza racing franchise built a strong track record for itself over almost 20 years, enough that it didn't seem possible for a new entry to fall totally flat. 

And yet, 2023's Forza Motorsport reboot was a shocking dud. Sure, it retained the series' signature visual splendour and robust vehicular handling, but beyond that, it was a strangely stodgy, even boring experience.

Even accepting that the mainline Motorsport series has always been more serious-minded than the more casual-skewing Horizon offshoot, where's the personality here?

The career mode is an utter drag, unaided by excessive hand-holding in the early going and a stamina-drainingly slow progression system. 

On launch the game was also sullied by poor driver AI, a host of bugs, and relentless matchmaking issues. 

Given that players had waited six years for a new flagship Forza game, for it to feel like a severe downgrade from Forza Motorsport 7 was a crushing letdown.
