10 Most Evil RPG Characters Of All Time

These villains make Bowser look like a kitten.

Everyone loves a good tale of adventure, of seeing heroes defy the odds to come out on top, watching knights battle dragons, sorcerers cast spells, marines defeat aliens, and more. That's why the role-playing game genre has such a strong place in gaming. Nothing provides players with a more immersive and fun narrative than a good RPG.

However, while the genre is undoubtedly delightful and fun, there's a seething, dark underbelly to it, for when you're telling a hero's tale, you've got to make sure they're going up against someone (or something) worthy.

RPGs excel at crafting villains you just can't forget, as only the most diabolical baddies act as the best foil for the players. This has led scores of monstrous villains to appear throughout the years. Still, only a select few can take their place atop the mountain of pure evil, and the following ten are easily the most deserving of that billing.

For the sake of keeping things interesting, only one entry per franchise will be allowed. This list will also contain spoilers for each entry discussed so as to go into further detail about these dastardly villains.

10. Dr Gavin Archer (Mass Effect Series)

Science is an incredibly important tool, especially in a sci-fi world - it's in the name, after all. Still, even those who will go to great lengths to advance the human race would agree that this mad scientist should never be allowed back into a lab.

Dr Gavin Archer appears in the Overlord DLC of Mass Effect 2, and, boy, does he make an awful impression. This heinous Cerberus researcher oversees the titular scientific experiment, in which he forcibly imprisons his autistic brother in a mechanical prison and fuses him with virtual intelligence. This, naturally, leads to his bro experiencing constant, unceasing agony, which many would say is a fate worse than death.

Now, while his actions are utterly unforgivable, he does show some remorse for them, which is why he sits higher on this list. Despite that, it's hard not to see the flawed man as pure evil, given the awful things he did to his brother.

The fact that this jerk is only at the number ten spot shows just how awful things are going to get, so strap yourselves in.
