For all its heavy themes, terrorism, tragedy and realistic stealth gameplay, the Metal Gear series has always had a taste for the absurd; as exemplified by its flamboyant bosses and diverse uses for cardboard boxes. Yet the most puzzling of all Metal Gear puzzles has to be that involving a giant owl egg. Stuck outside a laser-secured enemy base late in the game, you try to seek out appropriately Snakey ways of infiltrating it. Do you lure a guard out and steal his keycard, or maybe find a vent to crawl through? No, because thatd be far too plausible. After finding a little girl who tells you that the laser gate switches off at night (because presumably intruders only ever attack in broad daylight), you need to find a way to turn day to night, because it aint gonna happen by itself. And so you seek out a giant, well-guarded egg, take it back to the laser gate, and wait for an owl to hatch from it. Next, whip the owl out, and it will start hooting, signalling to the guard that it is indeed night-time and therefore time to turn off the laser fence for the night.
