10 Overlooked Upcoming Games You MUST Consider
10. Sword of the Sea
There's been curiously little chatter about the new game from Matt Nava, who served as the creative director on Giant Squid's serene adventure titles Abzu and The Pathless, and was also the art director on Thatgamecompany's masterpiece Journey.
Sword of the Sea is very clearly cut from the same cloth - a minimalist, atmospheric adventure game in which players surf across vast swaths of sand in an attempt to restore the lost ocean.
The art direction looks characteristically stunning, and the score from the team's regular collaborator Austin Wintory sounds fantastic, but what differentiates Sword of the Sea from the team's earlier work is its extreme sports influence,
Nava has been upfront about the fact that the traversal mechanics are inspired by classic snowboarding and skateboarding games, most notably Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and from the gameplay footage we've seen so far, he absolutely seems to have nailed that same feel.
Sword of the Sea releases on August 19.
