It’s worth combining all the sporting sequels together, as you’re either going to be hugely excited for the latest one in your sports sim of choice, or not care at all. There doesn’t tend to be much middle ground with these titles.

They attract huge player bases, filled with many casual gamers who might only buy a handful of games a year, or less. Packed with microtransactions and sticking to a uniform formula with only a roster updates and a couple of features added each year, it’s easy to look down on them.

Sports sims don’t push the boundaries of gaming, they don’t leave you with any strong memories and never really get included with the biggest and best games of the year. Based on sales figures though, they’re clearly highly anticipated releases.

When the dust settles, nobody is going to look back on 2019 and hold up FIFA 20 as the year’s best... especially as it’ll soon be followed by FIFA 21, then 22, and so on and so on. Still, for now, there’s plenty of people who can’t wait to get their hands on these games soon.
