10 Reasons Why Project Zomboid Is The Best Zombie Game Ever

A bite above the rest.

There is a great argument to make that the zombie genre has been oversaturated in pop culture for years, and gaming is no different. From the iconic Resident Evil, to the emotional gut punch of Telltale's Walking Dead, to the wackiness of Dead Rising, to the lesser known games like ZombiU, zombies have been everywhere in games for decades.

Despite that, there is just something inherently appealing about the undead biters. That natural appeal is one of the reasons why so many people have recently fallen into the Project Zomboid rabbit hole, the game currently boasting over 300,000 followers on Twitch.

An isometric survival RPG created by The Indie Stone, Project Zomboid (because the word ‘zombie’ is a bit too boring) scratches an itch that most zombie games just can’t reach. Originally released in 2011 and put on Steam in 2013, the game has been getting updated and improved on for almost a decade.

While not perfect, Zomboid is in a unique space all by itself, standing apart from its many, many peers. It has been one of the most entertaining gaming experiences in recent memory, and one of the best zombie games ever. But why? Let’s sink our teeth into it.

10. It's Just Plain Fun

Project Zomboid is a bit of a unique beast. After a quick tutorial to tell you the basics, the game then lets you roam free in the zombie apocalypse to figure things out for yourself. It fully expects you to die, the goal ultimately being to survive for as long as possible. And for your first few runs, you shouldn't expect to live for too long.

While brutal and challenging, each death has you learning something new, making you the best survivor possible. The satisfaction of surviving a zombie attack - the tense air of sneaking past the hordes to find some canned foods, sitting quietly in your base and listening to the radio for some well-earned rest, finding a crowbar that is practically begging to be used on a zombie’s noggin - all of these experiences are incredibly rewarding in their own ways.

Overall, figuring out how to survive in this title is some of the most fun you can have with the zombie genre.
