Strength can take a number of forms, especially in gaming. Not everyone on this list can throw fireballs or slay dragons, but they all bring something unique to the table in terms of their skills and abilities. One thing that is constant, however, is that they all have an indomitable personality, and are more than just what they can do in battle.

While there is still work to be done, I feel it is important to recognize the times when video games have given us truly exemplary, badass women.

Because as a medium of over 30 years, gaming is still fairly young, though in that time its primary demographic has almost exclusively been teenage boys. However, in recent years, the gaming industry has taken some rather large steps to make gaming an art form that everyone can enjoy, regardless of race, gender, age, or anything else.

Whether they are fighting aliens across the galaxy, being leaders, or are simply strong women that don't take any crap from anyone, here are 10 strong women who stand out as some of the finest in gaming history.

10. Commander Jane Shepard - Mass Effect

Commander Shepard, regardless of looks or gender, is truly a paragon of what a sci-fi protagonist should be.

Not one to let the interstellar politics get in the way of keeping the galaxy safe, Shepard does whatever is necessary to get the mission done. However, this is a rare case of the voice actor elevating the character above the norm.

While the male counterpart to Jane is perfectly serviceable, the acting of Jennifer Hale truly gives the female variant a much broader range of emotions, allowing for far more nuanced deliveries to better fit the situations that arise.

Shepard is always a badass in any telling of the story, it is safe to say that the games would have been lesser if anyone but Hale had voiced Jane Shepard.
