10 Things You Didn't Know About The Warriors

7. Real Gang Members Played An Integral Part In The Movie's Production

Although every gang documented within the film is a work of fiction, filming 'The Warriors' wouldn't have been possible without the cooperation of New York City's real life 'armies of the night'.

One example of the integral role which gangs played in assisting those behind the movie was the fact that an outfit known as The Mongrels were enlisted to 'protect' the productions trucks for $500 a day while real life gang members are among the 1000 extras used in the 'big meeting' scene in which Cyrus is murdered. This was at the request of Walter Hill in order to ensure authenticity but they were required to have off-duty police officers among the crowd in order to diffuse any potential trouble.

Speaking of which, the film's willingness to walk the thin line between fiction and encroaching on another gang's turf would also cause several problems that other films wouldn't ever anticipate. An ongoing issue was the disapproval of other gangs that hadn't been cast in the film including an incident where thousands of dollars worth of equipment was damaged after the set was breached during a lunch break.

Similarly, one gang were infuriated that their tag had been sprayed or 'tagged' over and demanded to be paid off while a mob from Coney Island known as The Homicides took exception to the fictional Warriors wearing their 'colours' on their turf and tensions remained high throughout filming.
