Just one year after Doki Doki Literature Club subverted expectations cleverly to create a fascinating story, Agony subverted expectations to create a shitty one.

What we expected was a gory horror experience that pushed the boundaries of what gamers might anticipate or even accept a video game could be. Certainly not for the faint of heart or those who aren’t alright with a bit of sex and violence, but a delightfully nasty and intriguing experience all the same. The heart-pounding trailer does a great job of selling a gory and vivid depiction of hell riddled with horrors. Sadly, that world was not realised and the parts of it that were sorely disappointed those eager to check it out.

While the game is graphic, it falls down on the horror aspects, the pacing, boring gameplay, and repetitive environments.

It’s almost impressive that they managed to take a concept so rife with possibilities of being over the top and deliciously grotesque and manage to make exploring it a total drag. If you liked the look of this one and want a gory world to explore you’re better off with Scorn.
