10 Video Game Moments So Difficult They Were Just Unfair
6. Silver Surfer - You Die If You Touch A Wall
The 1990 game, Silver Surfer, is a scrolling shoot 'em up, much like Gradius or Defender. The game is frustratingly difficult, mainly due to poor controls. In most scrolling shoot 'em ups, you need to hold down a button to spew projectiles at enemies.
In this game, you need to press the fire button every time to shoot your projectile. Since baddies constantly come at you from all angles, you'll be pressing that button so often, you are guaranteed a sprain in your hand.
To make the game more frustrating, you die after one hit. This is an insult to the Silver Surfer since he is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel comics. I'll assume the developers brainstormed by saying, "Hey! Instead of making the Surfer super-powerful, let's make him the weakest character in the game!" That's not a joke. The Surfer instantly dies if he touches anything; pumpkins, ducks, a jar, or a wall.
Just to compare, Super Mario is an human plumber but can survive being crushed by a dinosauric turtle. The Silver Surfer, on the other hand, is one of the most powerful beings in the cosmos but dies if he grazes a wall.
Go figure.
