10 Video Game Reboots You Didn't Know Were Happening
10. Golden Axe
Golden Axe is a classic side-scrolling fantasy-themed beat 'em up series, yet despite the popularity of the original 1989 game, its follow-ups never quite recaptured the same glory.
Golden Axe II was criticised for being too similar to the original, Golden Axe III wasn't even released outside of Japan, and a number of naff spin-offs only further diluted the perception of the brand.
The last entry was 2008's largely-panned 3D outing Golden Axe: Beast Rider, and while few were expecting Golden Axe to ever be revived, at the 2023 Game Awards Sega announced that a reboot was in fact in the works.
The few brief seconds of gameplay shown so far have confirmed it to be a 3D reimagining that will feature redesigned versions of original heroes Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead.
Precious little else has been unveiled about the game to date, though it'd be shocking if the new Golden Axe didn't at least have online multiplayer functionality.
