10 Video Game Sequels That Fixed NOTHING

8. Mass Effect: Andromeda

After four years in development, Mass Effect: Andromeda; a game that could have brought the popular franchise back to prominence after Mass Effect 3's controversial conclusion, instead failed to leverage the new generation.

Some did enjoy the more free-flowing combat system, but almost everything else regressed; the story ended up having too many similarities to the 2007 original, the characters weren't half as engaging as previous titles and the presentation fell victim to a heaping of internet ridicule.

On top of this, the theme of choice and consequence felt drastically stripped, with only a few critical moments allowing the player to influence the overall outcome.

What really killed the game was the trudging and agonising transition to the Frostbite 3 engine, which EA insisted would power all of its major IPs going forward. Mass Effect: Andromeda went through a difficult production cycle under Bioware's lesser team and it became a bitter struggle that transformed into a crushing disappointment upon release in March 2017.

All areas that the series had once excelled at suffered as a result, forcing a hard lesson on the studio. Migrating to a new engine should leave some time for the developers to get used to the new tech.
